Determing Relative Age of Rock Layers: An Investigative Approach

Created by
Kool School
In this activity students get a chance to apply their knowledge and understanding of paleontology to determine the relative age of rock layers and what types of conditions existed to produce them, as well as conceptualizing the use of index fossils to gleam information about Earth's geologic history.

Pangea (Pangaea) and FOSSILS: Come Explore and Answer HOW WE KNOW!

Kids know about Pangaea but do they know WHY WE THINK PANGAEA ONCE EXISTED? Probably not! Everyone knows about the puzzle fit but is that really enough scientific evidence? No way. In this activity, come explore the relationship between Pangaea and index fossils. This activity is a portion of the larger fossil tutorial/matching/identification LAB posted on TPT. FULL VERSION CLICK HERE Students begin with a tutorial on fossil terminology (definitions and images): cast fossils, mold fossil

Fossils. Geology. Anthropology.Nothing intrigues a middle school student like a good mystery.Challenge your students to explore, discover and question as they probe the mysterious fossilized Laetoli trackway discovered by the famed anthropologist Mary Leaky.I teach this mini unit within my Rocks and Minerals unit. The inquiry question posed is: What do rocks reveal about our past? Students soon discover that fossils in rocks contain tantalizing clues about Earth's past. The outline of the unit is

Archaeology and Paleontology Interactive Lab - {Editable}

This is a Very fun lab that will teach your students about how archaeologists and paleontologists explore and research. This lab allows your students to "excavate" the remains of a fossil site... a cookie! My students love completing this lab because they get to imagine the role that these important scientists play in the scientific community while having a blast at the same time! You can change/modify the materials/cost at your "store" that students buy their materials at; I use a table in t

Calculating Height Forensic Anthropology Worksheet or Lab

Great addition to your Forensic Anthropology Unit. Students either use given measurements or measure in-class models if you have them of the human arm and leg bones to calculate the height of the person that once used those bones. Calculation chart give students a formula for calculating the height in centimeters -- then walks them through converting that height to inches and feet and inches. Successfully used with 7th & 8th graders in my CSI exploratory course. Answer key included for th

This product includes two versions of my M&M half-life laboratory activity. One version is a more traditional Earth Science radioactive dating lab. The other is slightly more advanced Physics inquiry based lab that requires the use of a graphing calculator, like the TI-83 or TI-84. Both versions allow for hands-on examination as in this lab, students will experiment with a half-life model in which M&M candies represent radioactive "m&mium" atoms. The imprinted "M" on each candy repre

Geologic Timeline Activity -Students create timeline using adding maching tape.

Created by

For this activity I use rolls of adding machine tape- you need something at least 460 + a little extra cm long. Students use a meter stick to mark off TODAY. Then, leaving the meter stick in 1 spot, they mark off each of the periods at the correct measurements. Students then add in important events in geologic time onto the timelines. The result is a LONG roll of geologic time! A great VISUAL to the hard to conceptualize geologic timeline.

I use this after students have learned the basics about weathering, erosion, and deposition. My on-level or special needs students use their notes about WED to help them with the follow-up questions to the activity at each station. Students travel in groups around the room to complete each activity. Warning: as with most hands-on activities, it can get a little messy, but it's well worth it as students remember this activity and you can reference it as you go forward through the geology conte

BUNDLE Geology Lesson Plans

These are 12 of my best lesson plans on geology that teaches the big ideas behind rocks, minerals, and the science of geology. Students fluoresce minerals, chemically react rocks, streak powders, scratch glass, and play with atomic bonds as they learn how to be a real field geologist. You are about to become a real geologist as you explore the world of rocks, crystals, gems, fossils, and minerals by moving beyond just looking at pretty stones and really being able to identify, test, and class

Law of Superposition/ Fossils- Playdoh Activity/Exit Ticket

The Law of Superposition seems fairly simple until you have students analyze the relative age of fossils. This activity was designed to help students engage in this law of science with something we all seem to love...playdoh! I usually walk through the steps, showing students how to put the layers together, then they construct their own with a partner. The best part is the quick check I can do as I walk through the room or they hand me their completed papers. It shows who understands the con
