This is a great self-guided introduction to equations. Students loved working on this in groups as they began to explore equation basics. Additionally, a culturally responsive real world connection is drawn to the ethics of police violence. Students are more likely to remember something when there is a relevant connection, especially when that connection sparks debate. Students watch a short video about Benjamin Banneker's life and accomplishments, then collaborate to produce a PowerPoint slideshow. They'll solve equations using substitution to decode their own Tick-tock Clock, after watching a read-aloud of the book. Their creative side will run wild with an open slide for their own showcase of Mr. Banneker's life. My students were amazed at all he accomplished and excited to learn more to contribute to our celebration of Black History Month.
