Every year I get my students excited about the NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness Tournament. I see articles written year after year from statisticians, sports journalist, celebrities, etc. about predicting the perfect bracket. Regardless that most have accepted it is nearly impossible, it has not deterred these enthusiast from finding an algorithm or a machine that can predict the outcomes. This packet guides students through 1) An explanation of what March Madness is all about2) A reading abou

Algebra 1 End of the Year Project

This is a great project idea to connect topics in Algebra 1 with the real world. In the past, I have used this project as something to be presented after End of Course Exams. The students will take an Algebra 1 topic of their choice and relate to something in the real world. I have had students come back with projects on the following: Reading Music (functions with scales); Catering (conversions with recipes); Real Estate (multiple topics); Statistics of various activities or surveys (Graphs

End of Year Project

This EIGHT PROJECT BUNDLE (!!!!!) will keep your Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra 2 students busy for the last 1 - 3 weeks of school doing either independent or group projects, with or without access to technology. Projects include rubrics and grading criteria for the most part, although I sometimes just grade this with a daily participation grade rather than for correctness. Project topics include: - Area and Perimeter -- Design Your Own Playground! - Linear Modeling -- Human Height and Bone Le

Pre-Algebra Vocabulary Word Sort

Students match 14 terms with definitions and/or visual. Can scaffold by providing 1 or 2 of the clues. You cut out the words and students place them in the template on the following page. This can also be used a vocabulary station activity, or simply print out as a vocab reference tool. Terms include: variable, coefficient, constant, expression, equation, solution, evaluate, order of operations, substitution, inverse, algebra, and more.

Solving Equations and Inequalities Activity (Connect the Dots)

This is an activity to help students understand solving Equations and Inequalities. The front side of the activity has a variety of problems that, when solved correctly, tell which dots to connect in order to create a hidden picture on the back! Just in case you are wondering, yes, that is in fact Harry Potter! Students enjoy trying to figure out what picture is hidden behind all the math; this is a great puzzle activity and a great “thinker!”

Prime Factorization (or Factor Tree)

This activity / assessment has 16 questions where the student fills in the factor tree. It is a great way to start the kids thinking about factoring polynomials. it will also tell you who knows their multiplication tables. The students who could do these were able to factor more easily and were more likely to be able to apply it to factoring polynomials like x^2 + 10x +21 (x+3)(x+7) I put in an answer key too so you could leave this with a substitute teacher :-)

In this high interest, extensive assignment, students are given a three part project broken into daily tasks. The project is designed to assess the students profieciency with linear equations. They must design a water park on a coordinate plane, identify points, calculate slope, write equations, solve for midpoint, use the distance formula, and explain their results in a reflection paper.

Students cut out the variables from the instructions page then tape/glue them into the Independent Variables/Dependent Variables table. Variables come in pairs/from the same situation, but are completely mixed up on the page they cut them from. The direction page includes an example. Use this activity in your Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, or Algebra 2 class to help students practice determining if a variable is independent or dependent. Made on a full page of paper, but can be used in an interacti

This activity asks students to determine if the given numbers are rational or irrational (8.NS.1). Students choose two colors (one for rational and one for irrational) and color code the numbered pieces of the geometric shape. There are two different sets included which could be used as a review and quick assessment in the same format. It can also be used as a classroom activity or in math centers. Pictorial keys are included which makes grading quick and easy. Student artwork can be tessel

This is a comparison between linear and exponential functions (to help meet common core state standards). Students are given a situation (word problem) and asked to write if it is linear or exponential, an equation to represent it, and complete a table. Will lead to great discussions comparing situations. Word file so you can edit to meet your needs.

This project is designed for 7th-8th graders who have learned how to find unit rate, percents, proportions, and solve/write equations. I used this activity in a 7th grade honors math class at the end of the year. The students loved this activity! Students felt so proud when making their items and designing their business. When each student brought in their items to sell, it was very neat to see a different side of each student. Students can be creative as to what they want to sell.

Thanksgiving Math: Linear Equation Thanksgiving Dinner Project for Algebra 1

Harnessing the energy my students come in with right before break, I have created a one-period project in which they are going to create a linear equation related to a Thanksgiving meal. It is sometimes hard for students to create their own equations, but I am hoping that this scaffolded project will be something we can reference for the rest of our linear equations unit! The assignment sheet takes students through some quick new vocab related to economics (definitions included) and provides a ba

Inequality Word Problems

This worksheet has students write and solve inequalites. Students tend to get confused when the inequality says more than, a maximum, at least etc. This worksheet takes one problem and re-words it in 6 differnet ways. Very good at making sure students can write all types of inequalities when given a word problem.

I have taught this concept for 10+ years and this has to be the best way I have found to introduce this to students. The activity comes with directions and an answer key.

It is usually assigned after state testing for the last few weeks of school, allowing yourself a few days to grade them before grades are due. The students seem to enjoy the story and the mathematics in real life. The story can be adjusted to include places in your town. The story right now is based in San Marcos, CA. You can remove pages if you have less time, or add pages for a more tho
