Philosophy of Teaching: As a preschool teacher, I’ve seen first hand how children learn and discover things about their world and not even realize that they are learning just by participating in play. I have witnessed 3 year olds recite and explain simple mathematical and scientific concepts, on their developmental level, all because they played with a certain toy, or because we conducted an experiment in class during circle time. I've seen 3 and 4 year olds learn how to read and comprehend stories as well as recognize letters and numbers, not because we administered grueling tests to them but because we read to them, played with puzzles, and let them freely pretend, whether it's with dress up or sitting down at the writing table. If you ask me, the model of education that we use for preschool should be extended to higher learning as well. Which is why I have come to adopt constructivism as a foundation for my teaching philosophy. Constructivism is a scientific theory that says people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. When we encounter something new, we have to reconcile it with our previous ideas and experience. In other words, we are active creators of our own knowledge and in order to do this, we must ask questions, explore, and assess what we know. As the teacher, I serve as a guide for students through the learning experience. I believe that collaborative and cooperative learning are the crux of constructivism and although direct instruction will be necessary, my main job is to activate students background knowledge and set the stage for learning while guiding them through the process as opposed to being the main source of knowledge for them.

Keisha Jenkins is an elementary school teacher with a passion for teaching children and inspiring them to think critically, work hard, and be their best selves. In her quest for developing an atmosphere for diversity and inclusion in the classroom, she sees a need for black representation and an understanding of the black experience in America. World Is Mine Publishing was born out of three things, her love of creative writing, her passion as a teacher for creating collaborative, cooperative, and reflective lesson plans, and her desire to create and promote material that provides representation for Black children while also encouraging diversity.
