Basil Carryer trained as a primary teacher and spent much of his early career teaching working at junior and middle school levels in both rural and urban schools. He has also spent nine years as Head of Humanities in a private secondary school and twelve years as a lecturer in Social Studies at the University of Waikato. He has written two books on teaching Social Studies, designed a programme of 30 teaching units in Social Studies for New Zealand schools and has written three books for children on historical topics.

An enthusiastic believer in problem-based learning. Worked as an education consultant to schools for seven years introducing teachers to effective ways of introducing inquiry learning into their classrooms.
Master of Education
Basil Carryer has completed a Masters in Education. His thesis focussed on the ways in which the State gradually took on responsibility for the education, health and welfare of children in New Zealand between 1900 and 1935.
Basil Carryer has taken early retirement from his university job to indulge his passion for writing, designing and publishing classroom posters in the subjects of Science, Social Studies, History, Geography, Music and the Visual Arts.
