I have a Masters in Special Education and an Associate Diploma in Creative Arts. I have been teaching since 1996. I have taught in Samoa, Australia, England and Canada. I ran my own preschool in Canada from 2007 - 2019. I have been an artist and an art teacher since 2016. I have taught in mainstream school environments, a school for the Deaf, and schools for the hearing impaired. I ran Drama, Movement and Voice workshops as a business for 5 years. I have been painting and selling art since 2016.
My style caters for the individual child and is aware that all children learn in different ways and at different paces. I promote whole communication and believe that teaching all children, using some sign language, is beneficial to their overall learning. I am a powerful believer in using creativity to learn. I have created lesson plans that reflect this and they cover: ASL in accessible ways, drama, movement and fine arts for all ages.
My biggest reward is experiencing how much hearing children love using sign language when learning songs or reading books. I have enjoyed watching them use alphabet hand-shapes to help trigger their memory when being assessed for their letter and sound recognition. I recently wrote a devotional book using 52 pieces of my art. This has been a success and touches the hearts of women around the world. You can visit my website: www.jennymcconnellartist.com
