I believe my teaching career officially started in kindergarten when I decided to be a teacher. In 8th grade, I decided I wanted to teach math because of the growth in mathematical thinking I gained in Algebra 1. As an undergraduate, I tutored at our school’s learning center as well as with Upward Bound. As a graduate student, I taught courses at OSU and tutored (almost everything including reading and study skills) at Sylvan Learning Center. Upon completing my education, I taught mathematics (algebra through pre calculus) at a public high school in Oklahoma for 10 years. I currently teach at a community college in Oklahoma.
My teaching style is based off the process standards (NCTM). When teaching, I want my students to be engaged in the mathematics. I want them to do the thinking. I want them to be precise in their vocabulary, units and answers. I love to do activities to access prior knowledge, investigations to develop concepts, and real-world applications to make the ideas applicable to students. I enjoy getting students hooked with a problem, game or activity to where they don’t even realize how much they are thinking and learning.
