I have taught sophomore Biology for the past 8 years. During this time I have also taught electives in Sports Medicine and Forensics. This upcoming fall (2023/2024 school year) I will be introducing a new elective titled "Roots & Shoots" that introduces students to the basics of horticulture as well as home and commercial gardening.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE teaching life science because it is so applicable to all students, regardless of their interests and backgrounds. I teach Biology through the lens helping students understand who they are, and how they function as individuals, as well as where they fit and interact with the world around them. My classroom is a place of regular structure and patterns for students. I try to create a comfortable environment with regular routines where students can predict what is going to come next on a day to day basis. This allows for students to be more comfortable with engaging in new and unfamiliar content. Each topic of study has a the general structure of a general hook, content frontloading, a chance for students to apply content with peers, and then assessment. Within this structure I try to hit a variety of different learning styles to appease the wide range of learners I have in my heterogeneous classroom.
