I am currently a 3rd Grade teacher in an urban school district. I have over 22 years teaching experience. I have moved or change grade levels frequently, giving me a wide range of experience. For a few years, I taught 1st -5th grade in a classroom setting. Later, I became a Title I Reading Specialist that works with struggling readers ranging from grades K-6 over the past 18+ years. I truly enjoy working with students in small groups. It gives me time to understand them on a personal level, as well as meet the needs of their learning style. In addition to working with students, I also work with teachers to help strengthen their classroom reading instruction.
I have discovered that my struggling readers are more engaged if they are given visual and tactile activities. I try to provide materials and instructional strategies that keep my students focused and engaged while implementing a level of rigor and relevance.
The smiles on my students' faces when they realize that they are a reader!
