My first elementary school teaching experience was extraordinary because it was a public school focused on parent-teacher collaboration. Remarkably, the school required a yearly contribution of parent volunteer hours. We found that parent volunteers allowed us to teach with inordinate subject integration and project-based learning in the classroom. As our school embraced technology, so did I; I became a Google and Nearpod certified educator and eventually moved to a virtual education setting. I quickly realized that teaching via a screen necessitated an even higher level of family engagement. All of this to say that these experiences impressed upon me the inordinate power of guardian-teacher collaboration. Similarly, as a mother, I discovered that summers required filling in the gaps from the previous year. I communicated with teachers to identify my child's needs and worked to find avenues for enjoyable learning. My child inevitably needed a mental break from school, so my goal was to create resources that became a mechanism for both play and catch-up. Summer Teaching Mama intends to provide the same. STM offers integrated literacy units for homeschooling parents and classroom teachers. Additionally, STM provides classroom teachers with parent-accessible communication and units. The power of the parent-teacher partnership is immeasurable, which is why STM intends to create lessons and guidance toward that aim.
I believe that children learn best when they are inspired. In my experience, project based learning and thematic units motivate children to engage with curriculum. Additionally, it fosters the interdependence and critical thinking that is so crucial in our society today.
