START Avaline and Carli

Hi! My name is Avaline. Over the last 35 years, I've taught all grades but most extensively, junior high, high school and college in the arenas of Social Studies, English, Physical Education, Research Methods, and Performing Arts. I've also coached numerous basketball and volleyball teams to championships. I'm the co-owner of Start Communications Writing, an curriculum development company I run with my daughter Carli. I also supervise and develop programming for a vast array of home education programs and have been a key note speaker at conferences in the USA, Canada and Europe. As I mentioned previously, Carli and I develop all Start Communications Writing products together. She is an engaging, humorous communicator and is meticulous about communication methodology. Also as the former co-owner and marketing director of Bite Beef, a slow-grown grass fed and finished beef business, she and her business partner recently garnered the prestigious honor of being named in the top forty foodies under forty in Western Living magazine. Her communication and writing skills are intrinsic to all of her business dealings and have aided in gorgeous web design, winning marketing methodology and a great grasp of writing effectively and correctly. 

Together Carli and I run Start Communications. My extensive educational experience (over 24 years teaching) and Carli's passion for engaging design and written communication combine dynamically in all materials we create. All our products get their start in the classroom. I've had extensive experience with common reoccurring challenges in the classroom. Together Carli and I try to view each of those common challenges as an opportunity; an opportunity to simplify an essential concept. It is our hope you find our products offer refreshed instruction coupled with engaging practice opportunities, so that both teachers and students alike benefit from engaging in these common concepts re-imagined.

I graduated from Calvin College with a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Physical Education and Religious Studies. In addition I graduated from The University of Calgary with Bachelor of Education certification in secondary education in Physical Education in 1980. My daughter, Carli, graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Communications and Culture in 2008.
