I've now been teaching for over 12 years (yikes, that long already!??). I've worked in 5 different high schools, and have been steady at one for 8 years. I've taught Adult Education, Alternative Education, English, History and even more, but my main focus has been Indigenous Studies (First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples in present-day Canada) and integrating Indigenous history, cultures and perspectives into all subjects in the curriculum. While I am not an Indigenous person, I have endeavoured as a settler ally to make connections to nearby Indigenous communities and Knowledge Keepers, and have taken numerous courses and attended various workshops/conferences/gatherings to learn as much as I can to pass on to students. Through Special Education and Student Success/Guidance, I have also supported Indigenous youth by promoting local Indigenous pedagogical practices and by connecting with community partners. I am currently pursuing my Master of Education with a focus on Indigenous Education.
Student-centred; regular use of talking circles/discussion circles; inquiry-based; collaborative learning; guest speakers
One moment with a student that still stands out to me is when I was teaching adults who were returning to get their high school diploma and nearly all of them were very low-income. When my grandmother passed away, a student gave me a sympathy card, but it was one that had already been used and given to them; the student wrote that they didn't need the card anymore, but wanted to show me that they were thinking of me even if they couldn't afford their own card. I still have that card.
