Hi there! I have taught Drama for over 14 years, where I have designed and directed many a stage production as well as simpler classroom plays. I enjoy playwrighting, sewing, drawing, and stage dialects. I attended Stephen Sondheim's Young Playwright's workshop in NYC and had a script published in PLAYS: THE DRAMA MAGAZINE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE in March, 2008. Other obsessions include creating and selling funky furniture, putzing around in my herb garden, and running a professional pet-sitting business.
There's no such thing as dumbing down Shakespeare. We don't teach Calculus in 3rd grade but we do teach basic math skills that eventually lead up to it. The same can be true for Shakespeare. I support all teachers' needs for differentiating instruction to reach a wide variety of our diverse students and it's been shown that students in middle and high school respond better to Shakespeare if they have been exposed to it at younger ages. And not all kids are literary learners but they do all love the story lines, characters, themes, and beautiful quotes that have become the masterpieces of Shakespeare. Teachers need different ways for students to explore these ideas whether this is through full Shakespeare text, modern narratives, story books, comic books, videos, dance and movement, music, or visual art activities. Young people deserve to know Shakespeare and I applaud any teacher who offers this in any way. I offer projects in my store that have been hugely successful in my classrooms. I am interested in how these 400+ year old magical stories inspire your own creativity as a teacher and how that in turn creates students who are wise, empathetic, talented, motivated, literary, and intelligent for the coming generations. Kind and creative regards! Diane info@shakespeareshorties.com https://www.facebook.com/shakespeareshorties/
Greenbaum Grant - traveled to Ireland to visit the castles of the 16th century pirate queen Grace O'Malley; wrote a play for my middle school students and created some fun art activities around this experience.
