I have been teaching junior high math for 7 years!! Through my experience I have learned that the best classroom management tool is teaching with engaging lessons! A good math teacher is someone who facilitates meaningful math discussions and provides opportunities for students to think and discover concepts for themselves, through learning tasks. What is a learning task you may ask? A learning task is a student centered opportunity for learners to investigate a mathematical concept. Through individual, group, and class discussions, based around the task, students can grapple with a concept and gain a conceptual understanding that they will remember so so much better than if they had heard the information in a traditional lecture.
My general lesson plan includes the following: 1. Students investigate a standard by performing a task. 2. Students solidify the standard through discussion and taking notes. 3. Students practice the standard with an activity or game. The best way for students to learn math is to do math!! They need opportunities to think and struggle through a concept to really understand it.
