I started my career writing curricula -- in fact, my first major project was written when my oldest was a baby. It was a PreK curriculum for a kids' club, and is still in use today. That then-baby is now in college! I've since written many, many more projects, earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults, seen a handful of books, essays and poems published, and educated various grades and levels from PreK to college both at home and in the classroom.
I firmly believe learning should be 1. Natural -- we're always learning, all the time! and 2. FUN! I love creative approaches, I love mashing up disciplines, I LOVE unit studies that look at one topic, book, or period in history from every angle. At my absolute core I believe BOOKS are the gateway to learning. Literature -- real literature, no stuffy textbooks -- is at the heart of every lesson I teach.
I've won a Sustainable Arts Foundation grant, had a starred review from Publishers Weekly, placed in many contests like the Genesis Contest, Grace Notes Books contest, Literary Life annual competition. My books have been published by Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Eerdman's Books for Young Readers, Flying Ketchup Press. Oh, and I have a play published in the UK. ;-)
Undergrad I studied philosophy and psychology, with a focus on child development. After more than a decade teaching, parenting, and writing, I went back to school and earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University.
I'm currently a writer and homeschooling mama to (some of my) six children. I also do Skype school visits! If you'd like to schedule a Virtual Author Visit, just email me!
