The two of us, Judy Newhoff and Deanna Zevin, are classroom teachers each with over 30 years experience. Judy, recognized as a math expert in our district, has acted as an advisor in curriculum and instructional standards for mathematics at the local and statewide level. Deanna serves on school and district leadership teams developing curriculum and assists teachers in identifying effective teaching strategies.
In introducing new math skills, we both utilize appropriate literature to illustrate the concepts. We find that this is a motivational tool as well as a way to capture the students' interest and imagination. It is also an avenue for connecting the skills with the real world.
We have both received the honor "Teacher of the Year" on several occasions.
We both hold Multiple Subjects California Teaching Credentials. Deanna also has an Administrative and Leadership Credential.
Out of a need observed in both our own children and our students, we created a series of books to be used as a supplement to the state adopted math textbooks. With the new California State Standards, Common Core, which emphasize the importance of real world connection, we feel these books fill a gap that textbooks seldom address. We have piloted these books at several grade levels and have found them to be very successful with students.
