Peter Sloan has 15 years of English and Social Studies teaching experience in private and public schools, secondary and university level, including curriculum planning and implementation, and student advisement, both in the USA and abroad, especially in Japan. He currently teaches mainly freshmen and sophomores at an inner city high school, where he finds his formerly low-performing students can't get enough of technology (in a good way too!). While in his current position, he has helped many of his colleagues to take advantage of online resources, computer labs, SMARTBOARD, and other technologies. He has also helped several homeschooling families to find and use educational resources, and to create what they can't find elsewhere.
Students have called Mr. Sloan, "Strict, but kind," "Funny, but serious," and "Smart, but not stuck up." It's certain they've called him other things too at times, but ultimately they like feeling counted, respected, valued and listened to. Admittedly not the most hard charging grammarian of English teachers, nor the most detail-fixated of history teachers. Mr. Sloan is more interested in critical thinking and interacting with bigger pictures in history and literature, and linking events of the past and literature with what's going on in student lives and society today. Content and communication is foremost 80%, grammar and mechanics 20%. But he's found that the more time spent on the front end, the less time fighting a child to care about the end result.
