At the high end of applied Trigonometry in Analytic Algebra or Precalculus courses we encounter the Rotation of Axes, always with conics. There is a practical use for this technology because it teaches us to interrelate quantities in different

We solve triangles using the three laws: Cosines, Sines and Tangents - in addition we show derivations of the three laws and, in the case of the law of tangents, Newton's Formula. As our presentation is rather parsimonius, we offer talking points

This is a pictorial derivation of the sine and cosine of the sum of two angles. It has helped us to understand the outcome by actually seeing the quantities in play. And, for our visual students, the concept is solidified. We suggest that you

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I’m from Boston. I was educated at Boston Latin School (Boys Latin) and then at Boston Technical High School (for the Junior and Senior years). I attended Northeastern University, and participated in their “co-operative†program first as an Electrical Engineering major (2 yrs) and then as a Math major (when I transferred to the College of Liberal Arts, I had my choice of Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry for my major field of study). I chose Mathematics. After receiving my Masters degree from Boston State College, I was eligible to be certified in Math, Physics and Chemistry. I have (had) a life certificate from Massachusetts in those three subjects since 1979.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Mr. White is originally from Boston. He was accepted to and attended Boston Latin School, the requisite admission test was waived for Orrin. With family roots in Downeast Maine, it is no surprise to find that he spent every Summer there. His family called Orrin “Whizzer†but his friends called him “Wizardâ€. He was popular with the “natives†and learned many things from them. Those people have a history of self-sufficiency. Among other things, they taught him how to Dig Clams and Fish for Lobster. In college Orrin first trained in Electrical Engineering – he can wire just about anything you need to have wired. You see – Northeastern wasn’t just a book learning school – they sent out their students to work in the real world. The Northeastern Co-op Graduate has practical experience as well as the Theoretical knowledge. You can apply the adage “they hit the ground running†to these Graduates. His book "Spreadsheet Sorcery" is as yet unpublished.
