TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in my 25th year of teaching. I currently teach first and second year Web Technology as well as regular and Advanced Graphic Design and Illustration. I have presented nearly 100 times at local, state, and national conferences. My state offered an alternative certification in Technology Applications program for teachers for several years and I was fortunate enough to teach the Web Design portion of the certification course. I was then honored to be asked to participate in the writing of the certification test. I was a member of the team that wrote the course requirements for the state of Texas. I served as blogger and video lessons host/moderator for McGraw-Hill's Education division.

MY TEACHING STYLE

"Education is the kindling of a flame and not the filling of a vessel" -Socrates My philosophy of teaching encompasses two main ideas: every student can learn and learning should be fun. Student success is directly related to how important and relevant the information is to them. Thus, I try very hard to develop lessons and activities that impact the student. All of my lessons include detailed descriptions of how what we are doing is important and relevant to the students. For all information we cover, it is very important to me that my students know why we do what we do. In many instances, how much students learn relates to the atmosphere in which they learn. My classes are run so that students feel comfortable interacting with me and with each other. We do many group projects, which fosters interaction and communication. My classroom often gets loud, as I do like to have fun with my students. Still, I am careful to instill in them the difference between work time and fun time. I am proud that my students are willing to work hard and succeed at a high level. I constantly strive to find new ways to motivate and keep each of my students interested and involved. To me, the greatest reward is a student saying that I had a positive influence on their life. I take my role in the lives of my students very seriously, and hope that I can help them achieve a dream or goal, no matter how small. Helping students to succeed is what makes me successful.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a BA in English with a minor in Business. How did I turn that into teaching technology courses you ask? You know what they say: do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.
