I am a NBCT with a total of nine years teaching. Five of those years I taught successfully in an inner city school with a high poverty rate. I am currently in a public charter school where I am enjoying the trust and autonomy that is granted to me in regard to my teaching.
I am a firm believer that children excel when they experience a classroom that revolves around learning from their mistakes. In my classroom, students learn that they are in charge of their own learning and through careful reflection of their work, they are able to goal set. Children need to feel confident and safe enough to be risk-takers. They need rigorous lessons in which they are engaged in critical thinking, discourse, problem solving, and the analyzing of text. I believe in empowering students and holding them accountable to be successful.
In 2012, I became a National Board Certified Teacher in Elementary Literacy.
I graduated from Central Washington University in 2007 with a double major in Early Childhood Education as well as Elementary Education.
Hello! My name is Shelly Smith and I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Elementary Literacy. My students get results that are much higher than our district/state average! I believe much of it is due to the way in which literacy is taught in my classroom. Welcome to my Literacy Studio!
