TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have spent most of my teaching career with kindergarten students but have also taught various subjects in grades K-6. Being a mom of two and aunt of many, I have loads of patience and understand how little brains, bodies, and emotions work.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching philosophy can be divided into three main parts: a safe environment, academic growth, and connection with community. A safe environment is listed first because little learning can take place without it. A safe environment includes freedom to make mistakes or take academic risks without fear of being ridiculed by the teacher or other students. Students must feel that their emotional and physical needs are being met. Only then can they focus on learning. Once a safe classroom environment is established, academic achievement can flourish. Every child can learn. Effective teachers accept responsibility for student learning and maintain high expectations for all students. Instruction should include a wide variety of strategies taking into account students’ different learning styles (e.g., kinesthetic, interpersonal, verbal-linguistic). This, combined with interesting lessons taught with enthusiasm will do much to maintain student engagement and participation. Classroom activities and learning should also include connections to community, different cultures, and the environment. It is important for students to understand that they are active participants in an ever-changing world. Choices they make affect change in themselves and others. With all the challenges that come with teaching, I find equal reward.
