I have experience teaching business education, math, and career preparation at the high school level. I'm the co-author of Accounting 1, Canada's leading introductory accounting textbook. I have a weekly podcast called Teacher Tactics, which features weekly high school teaching strategies to make teaching less stress, more fulfilling, and fun. I believe there is joy in teaching and learning - and that humour helps! I've got a collection of funny educational music videos on my YouTube channel, which has been viewed by millions of teachers and students around the world.
I believe in classroom management, student engagement, and fostering curiosity and joy in learning.
Classroom management: I think classroom management should be based on developing positive student relationships instead of resorting immediately to negative consequences. Learning and instruction are important, but can't be done effectively without effective management.
Student engagement: I've found that my best lessons are the ones that get students interested and engaged in the material. My teaching style has evolved from teacher-focused to student-focused, where students are responsible for learning and involved in activities, games, and assignments that encourage them to engage with material.
Curiosity and joy: I believe that learning should be fun, and that there is a joy in learning - for both curriculum and teaching methods. I encourage students to question what they're learning and think critically about what they learn.
