I love reading quizzes! For every reading that was assigned, my students knew there would be an open-notebook reading quiz to follow. I asked not about the pointless minutiae but of specific details that students could then apply in their writing

As I've said for other items, I love reading quizzes. These are for each of the three sections of the novel (1-11, 12-18 and 19-30) and are intended as open-notebook quizzes. I created them before CCSS and revised them to mirror not only the

I accumulated a good number of reading quizzes to assess my students' depth of understanding, or at times just to hold them accountable for doing their reading. The main items are multiple choice quizzes organized by act, and I also included a few

I love reading quizzes! I taught Catcher for a number of years and refined the quizzes each year. I would assign a chunk of text for the kids to read over the course of a few days and encourage them to take optional reading notes. On the due date

The first 10 questions are multiple choice, designed to activate their understanding of details of the text. I recommend emphasizing the characters as types and foils in any type of review for this test. The second part is comprised of quotation

I taught Creative Writing several years ago and found that students were stumped on where to find stories. I had them write an "I remember..." list (very Lucy Calkins of me) for which the instructions were 1. Don't stop writing and 2. Don't think.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught high school English for 14 years before making the move to administration. My primary areas were American Literature, American Studies, AP Literature and Composition, and writing. I also was involved in developing standardized test prep that was not mindless. One of my teachers recommended I check out TPT because I have loads of files that I like to think are good

MY TEACHING STYLE

Every day should be part of a sustained conversation about ourselves, our learning, our world and our lives. The literature and writing opportunities give us a chance to assess the development of skills and push the development of citizens. I am no longer in the classroom, but my kids teased me that I was a cross between Dr. Cox from Scrubs and Tony Robbins. I think that was intended as a complement. We wrote nearly every day, we examined texts, we argued, we laughed (in the words of Voltaire, "frequently and hard") and celebrated what our hard work and curiosity could produce.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Thank you notes from students and their families are the best honors I ever received. Think about the trust our communities place in us -- it is awesome in the truest sense of the word -- and it is a blessing to know that we impact their lives.
