Hello & thanks for checking out my Bio-Page. I strive to make the abstract concepts of mathematics concrete. My teaching experience is unique. I was not a great student who loved school and wanted to become a teacher, because I had so much success as a youngster. On the contrary, school was difficult for me. I struggled through elementary, middle, and high school with the learning disability of dyslexia. My saving grace was my love of gymnastics. I was quite successful and wanted to complete at the national level, which became my driving force to attend college. I was determination to compete at the national level and became an NCAA gymnast. After college, I went into radio advertising sales. I thought I would be great at sale, but I failed miserably. That’s a longer story. I moved to California and decided to go back to school to get my teaching credential. While attending Sonoma State, I did research into my own dyslexia and discovered strategies to overcome this learning disability. I began to form a love of reading, and ultimately decided to write my first children’s book as a testament that no learning disability could hold me back. I share this rather lengthy description of my teaching experience because my experiences have made me the teacher I am today. As a kid, I felt “stupid” because I did not learn as fast as other kids. As a gymnast, I learned that the body can do amazing skills if you learn proper technique and build upon those skills. As a teacher, I know that all kids are smart, and that all kids can have a successful academic career; so long as they are given proper basics, effective progressions, and have relationships with teachers that develop their self-esteem! I currently teach 6th grade mathematics, science, communications in media, and restorative justice. I have taught all subjects as a self-contain classroom teacher for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.
My teaching style builds upon the basics, with and emphasis on developing each child’s academic self-esteem. I also integrate technology whenever applicable.
