Providing differentiated instruction allows children to become successful students. It is no secret that a classroom is composed of a variety of students with different personalities and learning styles. Embracing these differences, while incorporating them into the classroom structure, presents children with a greater opportunity to succeed. Allowing students to express their differences, especially in respect to assessment, gives students the opportunity to feel comfortable with the material they are working with. When a child feels confident with the content he or she is learning, they perform at exceedingly higher levels. In order to make sure all students are as confident with the material as possible, lessons must be tailored to all learning types and personalities. Allowing students to be involved in the planning gives them the chance to express which approach works best for them. This can be done easily by using student’s suggestions to create a list of acceptable assessment options and allowing them to carry out an assessment of their choice. Thus enabling the students to create a lesson that has been differentiated by process, choice, and learning modality.
