Steve Foster, currently a high school history teacher in Durango, Colorado, is a history junkie. I believe that the main way to improve our future is to learn about the past. While history is about dates and dead people for some, in my opinion it should really be about relating historical developments to the present day and the future, so that it is really meaningful and relevant for students. As a history teacher, I feel it is our responsibility to make history engaging for students so that they can have the tools they need to solve the big problems they will face once they become the leaders of our society.
As educators, we all know that student engagement is critical in order to effective learning. Unfortunately, there are a lot of distractions these days that we have to compete with! Thankfully, I believe that history can be extremely engaging - especially when it relates to the students themselves and the world they are living in.
Steve was a member of the Colorado Geographic Alliance Advisory Board from 2014-16, and will be participating in an around-the-world sabbatical under the supervision of Dr. Carol Neel of Colorado College. My journey, expected to take place from January through June 2024, will focus on the impacts of Colonization from the perspective of the Colonized.
