TEACHING EXPERIENCE

HIGH SCHOOL: * 1 summer teaching high school ELA college-prep to immigrant youth MIDDLE SCHOOL: * 1 year full-time tutoring in math and ELA * 1 year teaching creative writing to 6th graders as an enrichment course * 2 years teaching 6th grade writing/grammar * 1 year teaching critical media literacy to mixed 6th/7th grade classes as an enrichment course

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in: * Bilingual education * Asking fewer questions and giving more time for thoughtful answers, as opposed to many questions with one-word answers * Increasing student talk time * Using PPTs with visuals and clear formatting * Giving students many opportunities to write ideas in low-risk environments, such as "Stop & Jot" moments in the middle of class * Teaching the function of language and not just the rules * Challenging Neoliberal thinking and empowering students to do the same * Incorporating social justice issues * Setting clear expectations for students to increase value gained from activities and class time * Preparing students for life and citizenship, not just standardized tests
