TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Middle School Science 42.5 years (primarily Life Science). My experience included the following: 0.5 years at Burgin Independent School (public) in Burgin, KY; 3 years at South Oldham Middle School (public) in Crestwood, KY; 3 years at St. Raphael School (Catholic) in Louisville, KY; 36 years at Kentucky Country Day School (private, independent) in Louisville, KY. I was fortunate to be able to develop many of my own units, and am pleased that some of my efforts may 'live on' in support of other teachers and children.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Emphasis on hands-on learning, scientific method based labs, local organisms, garden based science, and dissections.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

1975 Graduated With High Distinction from Centre College of Kentucky; 1991 Leadership Education participant (Louisville Community Foundation); 1998 Kentucky Country Day School Outstanding Teacher award; 2006 Courier-Journal Forum Fellow; member of Phi Beta Kappa Society

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.S. in Biology, Centre College of Kentucky; M.S. in Biology, Western Kentucky University; Rank 1, University of Louisville

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I've been married to Gayle since 1981. We have 2 adult daughters. I enjoy birding and fishing with my wife, and working on middle school life science lessons / labs. In May of 2020, after some heart issues, I retired (after 42.5 years of teaching). I volunteered from 1985 - 2012 with RESULTS (an anti-poverty lobbying organization). My teaching career consisted of the following: one Spring semester at Burgin Independent School, in Burgin, KY; 3 years in the parochial school system in Louisville, Kentucky (St. Raphael School), 3 years in the public school system in Oldham County, Kentucky (South Oldham Middle School); and 36 years in a private, independent school in Louisville, KY (Kentucky Country Day School). After retirement, with the support or the author of Globe Life Science, I revised this textbook. The project took about 15 months, and the new book (now called Discovering Life Science) is available on Amazon.
