I've been a middle school music teacher since January 2003. One of those years, I split my time and also worked at the high school teaching a music course (Music A-Z) for non-musical students. Now, I teach general music and choir to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders and love it.
Student centered. There is information that you have to sometimes get up in front of the class and explain or demonstrate, but the more the kids are active, in mind and body, the better. I want them thinking and figuring out rather than me showing and them simply regurgitating. I also want them to create music every chance they get (except creating a rhythm on the desk while someone is speaking). Doing, listening, creating, performing- helps them learn it.
My choir is a Music in the Parks and Festival of Music ratings "Excellent" or "Superior" winner over multiple years, as well as Espirit de Corp award winners for many of those years. We have performed at MLB games singing the National Anthem.
