I’ve been working in Adult Basic Education since 2006. I work for a public school district. I’ve worked with all ESL levels, but currently work with beginners to low-intermediates. My students come from all over the world, but Minnesota is home to many Ethiopians, Hmong, Latinos, Russian, and Somalis. Lower level learners are my favorite. I'm always challenged to explain myself clearly, organize my classroom appropriately, and to introduce concepts in an understandable order. I create most of my own curriculum. At first it was out of necessity - when I first started teaching, there was very little curriculum for adults. Now there is more, but frankly, I just love to write curriculum!
The best teaching advice I ever received is “ Do 1 thing in 10 different ways. Don’t do 10 different things.” I designed my curriculum with this in mind. I want my students to be active participants in the classroom. This means that they have to understand the routine. My curriculum is designed to enable the students to learn in a predictable, but interesting, way. They can devote their energy to learning rather than figuring out the classroom environment. I strive to be calm, friendly, and accepting.
