PGCE qualified teacher and Humanities Coordinator. Seven years experience teaching secondary English and History at international schools using the British Curriculum. Key Stage 3, IGCSE and A Level (CIE).
Every student has a higher potential that must be unlocked, nurtured and encouraged continually. I do this by instilling a ‘Growth Mindset’ approach for students to not only reach and surpass predicted targets, but to understand that they can take ownership of their learning by accepting challenges and enjoy the process of learning to learn. High expectations are set and I then provide them with the tools they needs to progress, praising them as they do so. I want to help prepare and develop global citizens through a holistic education. Rated as an outstanding teacher, I am passionate about my job, inside and outside the classroom. With a varied style that focuses on delivering high quality, creative and student-centred lessons, my experience as a secondary History teacher, along with a strong EAL and English teaching background, has given me the tools to effectively teach students of differing abilities from all over the world. We live in an ever changing world that will demand students to continually and creatively adapt their approaches to future endeavours. To paraphrase Sir Ken Robinson, we need to educate the whole being through creative approaches. Because of this, creativity and historical concepts are a focal point of my lessons. Students are encouraged to not only learn the context but also to master the conceptual skills they need to understand the mechanizations of the world around them. I make the topics we teach relevant to them, which in turn ignites a personal curiosity and motivation. I celebrate and understand the challenges of diversity. A sense of identity and independence is paramount to forging the best start in life. I was born in Singapore and raised in many different countries until I settled in the UK at the age of 12. I understand on a personal level how challenging transitions can be during adolescence, so it is essential that teachers are equipped with the right skills to support students in an international setting. My position as an ‘Adult Third Culture Kid’ has been extremely beneficial in helping me forge meaningful relationships with my students, both as a homeroom and subject teacher. I have delivered CPD workshops about Third Culture Kids to Secondary staff at my school, providing academic and pastoral strategies to help children in transition. Many activities to assimilate students in transition are included in my lessons.
