As the Center Director for a handful of private tutoring companies, I learned a great deal about how different schools approach learning differently. I took this experience with diverse learning environments and explored them further as I taught in a low-income public school, teaching 3rd and 4th grades. Most recently, I have been working as a Math Specialist in an independent school, working with 2nd through 5th grades.
My teaching style is inclusive, but I tend to "teach to the top". I have found that by teaching "to" the higher ability levels in my class, my lower students rise to the challenge. I have had much greater success with this approach than I have in teaching to the ability of my lowest students. Obviously, I value differentiation greatly, and work to meet the needs of all of my students. However, maintaining high expectations has garnered the greatest results in my low performing schools and in my high performing schools.
