I believe education, particularly social science education, can provide illumination for my students to value their knowledge, their minds, and their experiences. As a history educator, I help my students learn to be aware that they bring along their own bias and identity when examining the past. America’s identity is a complex one. There is no single narrative that sums up the many people who have lived on this land and who have contributed to our nation. I believe it is essential that my students understand the complexity, illusion, myth, clarity, and empathy that studying history can provide. In my classroom, my students are familiar with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s narrative of the “danger of a single story.” Adichie provides a powerful perspective about what happens when complex human beings and situations are reduced to one, single narrative. Learning about history can be limiting or empowering— depending on the perspective and whose stories are being told, analyzed, and believed.
