I taught for almost 40 years in public school settings in Texas and Wisconsin. My degree is in Elementary Education 1-8 and Special Education K-12. i have a Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities.
For most of my career, I worked with students who didn't do well in school. I tried to teach each student using their own interests. Just about every student liked "playing" educational games, so I made a lot of my own materials. A picture gave added information for my students that just wasn't there without it.(Think of the adjectives...colors, mood, feelings, details) that don't automatically come to the mind of someone who believes they can't be successful. I always got better results when I found a hook to get them interested, and used mnemonics, songs, rhymes and visuals to keep them interested.
Dillard's Teacher of the month I was selected Teacher of the Week by either Shriner's or Lion's Club in the 90's. Teacher of the Year at Ashworth Elementary in Arlington, TX, during the 1999-2000 school year.
Parochial elementary through grade 4, then public school through grade 9 and parochial high school until graduation. I immediately attended college after high school. Graduated with a bachelor degree in Education in 1979. I started a Master's program in learning disabilities and finished the classes and completed everything except the final exam, then we moved to Texas. I flew back to Wisconsin in the summer of 1985, and received a Master's Degree with honors that summer.
I was born to teach, and loved every minute of my career. I ended up having a couple of surgeries and decided it was time to retire in December of 2017. I have been happily married for 43 years and have 3 adopted children and two fabulous grandchildren. I am currently retired but am still making visuals for my daughter who is teaching English in Nanjing, China. Friends encouraged me to start up a store at Teachers Pay Teachers. I was enjoying my retirement way too much to do that. Then my daughter's friends encouraged me through her, so here I am.
