I taught 5 years of ELA in a departmentalized classroom for grades 6th and 7th in Kilmarnock, VA. I returned to Texas and taught 27 years in both self-contained and departmentalized classrooms for grades 4th and 5th. My departmentalized time was teaching Science and Social Studies.
I implemented the TCI Approach of student-centered active instruction and the Interactive Student Notebook in all subject areas in my various classrooms. I am a firm believer in offering discovery learning opportunities for my students. I am also a proponent of inquiry-learning and broad essential questions to allow students to investigate all information put before them. My EUREKA! discovery labs were developed when I had the opportunity to set up 4 different discovery labs for student groups to complete independently while I worked with small reading groups and tutoring groups in my self-contained classroom. These discovery labs were available for 3-4 weeks before the labs were changed. At the end of the 3-4 weeks, the 4 labs were debriefed so the groups could discuss their findings and conclusions.
