TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my 25th year of teaching. I have taught in Arkansas for 6 years and currently in my 19th year in Texas. I have taught second grade 5 years, fifth grade 1 year, 4th grade 15 years, and I am currently teaching 6th grade Reading in Middle School going into my eighth year. I have experience teaching GT, Dyslexia, ESL and SPED scholars in the Reading classroom. I set up a Model classroom where new teachers came and observed my teaching and strategies in the Reading Workshop classroom. I have been a grade level chair. I have experience using Units of Study created by Lucy Caulkins, writing curriculum and tutoring scholars grades 2-6. created my own tutoring program for a school that I worked in in Sherwood, Arkansas.I am also an Independent Reading Tutor grades 2-6 As a Reading Consultant I aim to support educators to integrate data-driven instruction effectively in the reading workshop model. I provide support via E-books for self professional development, Strategic planning sessions, curriculum writing and 1 on 1 mentorship.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in a student centered classroom where kids are actively involved through discussions, stations, small groups, book clubs and partnerships. I facilitate learning through posing questions, utilizing quick writes, feedback, small groups and analyzing data to drive instructions through targeted lessons. I love to incorporate books, poetry and games into all of the lessons I teach. I believe if I am doing all the talking then I am the only one learning. I believe that student data should drive instruction and that students should be responsible for analyzing their own data and setting goals to monitor over a period of time. I believe as educators it is our responsibility to continue to learn and grow in our craft, and to do what it is we expect students to do in order to see the potential struggles and possible misconceptions that can arise.
