My name is Kristen Edge, and I teach mostly Freshmen and Sophomores for College Prep English and World History and Geography at a small charter school in Arizona. I try to give students choice in the learning process while guiding them towards various concepts. Many of my work is project based, some individual and some group, because I want the students to be engaged for the entire class period, plus that is when I get to go around and help them the most to make sure everyone understands what we are doing and to help the ones struggling. I also try to incorporate as much interdisciplinary work as possible because I believe that each subject is naturally intertwined with many others and cannot be treated alone. Before teaching, I worked as a Social Worker where I learned more about some student's home lives than I would have wanted, but it taught me a lot about compassion and learning styles that I use to this day.
I believe in approaching class and learning as a student-centered activity. I consistently seek to explore the relevance in what I do in class and share that with my students so they care and understand why we do what we do. I like to vary how I teach and try to access the different learners in my classroom while making it fun. Overall, I believe that everyone works differently, so I try to implement that philosophy into how I teach as well. Oh, and I fully believe in the necessity of interdisciplinary teaching and learning, which I try to incorporate into my curriculum every week.
