Ecstatic Mathematics Addicts

Besides my obsession with my pet rabbits, i have a passion for math! I am 5-12 certified, along with general special education. I have worked in Middle and High Schools, and found that all students love math. Every day, I see math education in schools changing due to inspiring and caring educators that have a passion to inspire students, and help them gain their confidence to succeed.

My philosophy is that introducing fresh perspectives and new techniques allow students to evolve and grow. Have you ever heard someone say that they are not a math person so they "can't do math"? Or even, have you ever said this about yourself? This is a common misconception that has been imprinted on too many student's minds, and I plan to help them overcome this mindset and achieve success in mathematics. What does it mean to be, or not to be, a math person? To "not" be one means that you have difficulty with math and have trouble finding the correct answer. This kind of mindset convinces a student that they can't be successful in the subject so they won't even try. They get discouraged to succeed and tend to be more distracted in class because they believe they are not a "math person". Personally, I've been in classrooms where a teacher asked their students if anyone here is not a math person! Right there they are discouraging their students with this incorrect term and stereotype that since they had trouble in the past, they will again continue their year with that mindset of not doing well in class. I plan to change this in my classrooms. I want to encourage my students that everyone can succeed in math, and that I will guide them to reach their full potential. I feel strongly about and "I do, We do, You do" style of teaching, where students can take their education into their own hands and gain independence. I encourage station work and guiding questions to motivate student's thinking, and can recap on prior knowledge. I feel that student's benefit from hearing each other and working with peers.

Along with my home life being centered around my rabbits and cats, I have a passion for sports. I've played ice hockey since I was 4 years old, and began coaching at 18. I've had inspiring coaches, mentors, and teachers that inspired me to realize that education is not just about a teaching at the students, but its about you guiding the students, and encouraging independence and confidence in themselves.
