I taught Pre-K-1st grade for five years. I have been preparing pre-service teachers at the college level since 2002. Although I've taught methods of teaching Social Studies, integrating the arts, and behavior/classroom management, my true passion is in my current teaching position emphasizing children's literature and methods of teaching reading and language arts.
I infuse my interactive lectures with literature, the arts, processing brain breaks, cooperative learning opportunities, and hands-on practice each session. My students never sit passively for long, as I make it a personal goal to keep them up, moving, and involved in their learning. I take my calling very seriously and do all I can to prepare my students for their own classrooms.
I was named the Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished Teacher of the Year. I also was named the Lewis E. Schollian Endowed Chair for the Department of Education of Southwest Baptist University.
I graduated with a B.S. degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Southwest Baptist University. I completed my M.S degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Missouri--Columbia. I obtained my Ed.D in Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, and Reading from Liberty University.
I am a Christian wife, mother of two, professor of early childhood, elementary, middle school, and graduate education. I supervise student teachers and am the co-editor of The Missouri Reader journal published for the Missouri State Council of the International Reading Association.
