I taught chemistry at the university level before moving to high school to teach both biology and chemistry. Some of my materials have been used effectively by a middle-school teacher.
Students have many different learning styles, so I have found it effective to use a variety of teaching styles. Guided enquiry is more time consuming, but I believe that it is especially effective for long-term retention of material. Hands-on experience is essential. Many tasks look easy when watching an experienced person do the work. Effective learning is best accomplished by doing. Most of my worksheets for high school chemistry students are meant to provide students with practice that is interspersed with short demonstrations of the problem-solving strategies.
