I have been helping people with math for as long as I can remember, so when I got laid off from my computer programming job, it was a natural decision for me to become a Private Math Tutor (I also tutor Chemistry and Language Arts from time to time!) I have been an adjunct math professor at the local community college since 2008, where I teach Prealgebra and Beginning Algebra to students ranging in age from 18 to 63. Guided problem solving helps struggling students by breaking down the concepts and helping them understand and remember the steps. The worksheet packets taper off from step-by-step instructions to a limited number of tips and steps and then finally to just problems-to-solve via the review packets. Using the worksheet packets as guided lecture notes helps the students focus less on the stress of trying to write everything down and more on understanding the material and working through problems together as a class and then alone for immediate reinforcement of the concepts.
Since many people have anxiety associated with math, I try to make the students feel comfortable asking questions and volunteering answers. I encourage students to feel like they are all in this together and that working with other students benefits everyone.
