After enjoying a career in the graphic arts and printing industry, I returned to school for a Master's Degree in Teaching. My classroom teaching includes 11 years teaching 2nd graders and this is my fifth year teaching first graders.
I admire Lev Vygotsky's views about interaction with peers as an effective way of developing skills and strategies. His suggestion that teachers use cooperative learning exercises where less competent children develop with help from more skillful peers - within the zone of proximal development is the basis of my teaching practice. I strongly believe that providing the appropriate assistance will give students enough of a "boost" to achieve the task at hand.
