Owner and Teacher - Musically Minded, Inc. September 2003-Present n Own and operate a successful early childhood music education company, which serves ten childcare centers in and around Seattle by providing weekly music enrichment classes. n Manage four teachers who travel to childcare centers in and around Seattle. Ensure their skills meet the expectations of each customer by providing on-going training, coaching and researched based curriculum. n Oversee all aspects of the company including marketing, customer relations, curriculum design and human resources. STARS Trainer, Washington State Department of Learning September 2005-Present n Conduct trainings for early childhood educators at various conferences including Bright Horizons Professional Days, Easter Seals Professional Days and WAEYC State Conference. n Provide ways teachers can integrate music into their classrooms on a daily basis to meet learning goals such as pre-literacy and pre-math skills. n Write and record songs teachers are able to successfully utilize in their classroom through a hands-on training approach. Elementary Music Educator - Enumclaw School District August 2000 - June 2003 n Created lesson planning used to inspire children to find their inner musician as well as learn to appreciate music in their lives. n Developed and directed music performances for all grade levels. n Successful wrote and received two artists in residence grants which provided the opportunity for students to work directly with a professional drummer over a two-week period. Elementary Music Educator – South Kitsap School District August 1999 - June 2000 n Inspired children in grades 1st through 5th to create as well as enjoy the world of music. n Organized grade level performances including a large musical production. n Created a before school choir which performed at several school functions.

As an educator since 1999, I have attended a variety of trainings. Most of which were inspiring and proved to be instrumental in the growth of my teaching. Not all fit into this category but it was this spectrum that played a role in the development of training style. How I approach trainings for educators is very similar to the way I teach children. Creating and environment where leaners feel safe and free to learn regardless of their abilities starts by showing the vast number of ways to use music in the classroom. Many adults who attend my trainers are intimated because they feel their musical skills are not strong enough to be able to utilize music as a teaching strategy. Once they see there is more to music than singing, they are able to relax and the stage is set for learning to take place. Next comes how the information is presented. I do this by involving a variety of senses in every activity I teach. When presenting new activities to adults I encourage them to be fully immersed in the learning experience just as their children would be in the classroom. In order for this strategy to be effective I suggest participants put down their notes and prepare to have fun. This style of active learning is called implicit learning (Jensen, 2001). Its counterpart, explicit learning, is the strategy used when an instructor tells the learner the information in a lecture format. While explicit learning has its place, implicit learning has been found to create more neural networks in the brain and implore more senses. It is important to me I too continue to grow professionally by attending trainings, reading the latest research that applies to my field as well as trying new strategies that challenge me to improve my teaching. Enthusiasm, knowledge and continuing education allows me to stay fresh both with children and adults.

Jocelyn received her BA from the University of Montana in Music Education and her MA in Music Education from the University of Washington in 2005. She is a certified K-12 music educator in Washington state as well as a Washington S.T.A.R.S. trainer. After moving to Washington State, she taught elementary general music for one year in Port Orchard and 3 years in Enumclaw. While Jocelyn greatly enjoyed her time there, she felt children needed to have their “inner musician” awakened sooner than Kindergarten. In the Fall of 2003, Jocelyn started Musically Minded, Inc., with the hope of reaching the very youngest. Jocelyn takes an active role as both a teacher and trainer. Being involved in this way allows her to stay aware of the changing needs of today’s children. Jocelyn her husband, Eric, live in Maple Valley with their budding musicians, Maciella and Natia.
