TEACHING EXPERIENCE

We are licensed clinical social workers and registered play therapists. Our work is based on cognitive-behavioral theory and developmental theory, particularly the social-cognitive developmental theory advanced by Lev Vygotsky. We have extensive experience working with children (pre-K through middle school) in home and school settings. We are passionate about helping children understand their emotions and understand how their minds work--all in service of helping them be the wonderful persons that they are meant to be! We believe that playful, active, creative interventions that engage the “whole child” are essential components in any counselor/therapist’s tool kit.

MY TEACHING STYLE

We believe that with the right support for their emotional and social development, children can learn to understand their own hearts and minds. This self-understanding leads to: 1) better self-regulation 2) improved relationships with others, and 3) ability to act in accordance with their best intentions, in the classroom and elsewhere. The educational resources that we have developed at the Yeager Center for Children and Families are geared to helping you to provide that "just-right support" for the hearts and minds of the students that you work with. “What children can do with the assistance of others might be...more indicative of their mental development than what they can do alone.” (Lev Vygotsky, Mind in Society)

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Louisiana Social Workers of the Year; Louisiana Play Therapists of the Year; Louisiana Association for Play Therapy Lifetime Achievement Award; Winner, ChildsWork/ChildPlay Games to Help People award; Owners/Directors of PlayTherapyWorks; Authors of Executive Function and Child Development (2013, W.W. Norton)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

We have undergraduate degrees in psychology and sociology, graduate degrees and licenses in clinical social work, and certifications as play therapists and play therapist supervisors. We’ve had some fantastic instructors in our formal learning, but our best teachers have been the children that we have counseled over the years.
