I spend two years teaching at Burntwood School for Girls in Wandsworth, London. Part of that time I was teaching Maths and the rest of the time I filled in for other teachers, covering a multitude of subjects. I then tried my hand as a primary school teacher, but soon realised that I belong in a maths class. For the last 8 years, I have been a High School Maths Teacher at one of the top Girls Schools in South Africa, teaching all the classes from gr 8 to gr 12. During the last couple of years,my focus has shifted to incorporating technology into the classroom in an effective and efficient way.
Even though I thoroughly believe that the understanding of mathematical concepts should be developed, I also believe in practising those concepts. Just as understanding how your body and muscles work and how to do exercises, doesn't make you fit (or keep you fit), understanding mathematical concepts does not make you proficient in maths. If I want to be fit I need to jog (even though I find it the most boring activity on earth), the same way, if I want to be good in maths I have to practice my skills. I spend a lot of time making user friendly powerpoint presentations for my lessons. I try to make them easy to use for teachers and easy to follow for learners.
