TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience is primarily in science education. I have taught 7th-grade science for 3 years. My classroom holds a diverse range of learners and abilities, included many ELL learners. My activities are designed to differentiate to many learning styles and needs. I also teach and design curriculum for Duke University's Talent Identification Program for gifted and talented students middle and high school students. I have taught the following courses (and uploaded some of the curriculum): The Future of Food: How will we feed a growing population of 9 billion in 2050?, The Future of Renewable Energy, Injustices in the Criminal Justice System, Marine Biology and Oceanography, and Medicine and Healthcare in light of a Hurricane.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style is very interactive and engaging. I value classroom education that is meaningful and purposeful to students. I believe that classroom learning comes to life when it is real life and relevant to their lives and the local and global communities they are growing up in. I create a lot of activities that are hands-on and engaging. I highly value differentiation to different learning styles and needs, so I create a lot of self-directed hands-on lab experiments and self-directed creative projects. Montessori philosophies strongly guide my teaching pedagogies. I aim for my classroom activities to teach students to be self-directed and independent, which I believe will ultimately empower them to be the leaders of their futures.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended Lewis % Clark College in Portland, Oregon for undergraduate. I double majored in Psychology and Anthropology. In my senior year, I applied for Teach for America. I was accepted and placed in very rural Eastern North Carolina. I have been teaching 7th-grade science for the past three years at Charity Middle School in Rose Hill, North Carolina. During my first and second years of teaching, I pursued a licensure program through Eastern Carolina Univeristy for Middle Grades Science and Mathematics. Next fall, I will be pursuing a Ph.D. in STEM education at the Univeristy of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.
