I have 11 years English Language Arts Teaching experience. I teach English literature, Broadcast Journalism, and College Communication (the course teaches communication skills and public speaking). I am also an adjunct English professor for two community colleges focusing on creative writing and ACT testing strategies. Prior to becoming a teacher I worked as a reporter and public relations specialist. I love being able to use my college education and career experience in the classroom since it's very relevant!
My broadcast course is very hands on. I bring in lots of interactive examples and let the students be as creative as they please. In all of my classes I have a wide variety of learners, so I am able to modify and accommodate for many levels.
In December 2020 I became National Board Certified; I am the recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Award for Region 5; First Place In-Depth Radio Reporting, “School Discipline: Behind Classroom Doors.” The project explores one school’s fight to overcome a host of escalating discipline problems. I also obtained the Illinois Broadcaster’s Association-University Silver Dome Award for Best TV Public Affairs/News Magazine for “The International Experience: A Documentary.”
