I have been teaching PreAP Biology for ten years. The school I work at uses a block system where students take four classes per semester much like college. This means I go through the material twice a year and have had twice as much time to refine activities compared to teachers who are at a traditional school.
Students need to be engaged to learn. The bulk of my teaching is meant to excite students about science and learning. Once they are hooked it is simply a matter of guiding them through the material. The activities I create are student-centered. My classroom atmosphere is one of collaboration and inclusion. I see my roll as a facilitator and tutor rather than a "sage on a stage".
