TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I was a substitute teacher for two years before landing my first teaching job. I subbed in ALL grades and loved it. I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English/Language Arts, 9th grade honors ELA, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade AVID, 3rd grade Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), and 4th/5th grade Read 180; as well as some co-teaching as the Reading/Language Arts Specialist.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Go slow to go fast is often my mantra. I spend time getting to know my students, building community in the classroom, and establishing procedures so that I am a facilitator and students are taking ownership. I believe that rigor and fun can happen at the same time and that my students are critical thinkers waiting to blossom and change the world. I do not have it ALL figured out and I am learning everyday!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Teacher of the Year Nominee (2017, 2018, 2019) - was a finalist (top five in the district) for 2017 and 2019. 21st Century Encore Award (2010) - nominated by a student and submitted to the district for making a difference in a student's life by going the "extra mile". Standards Award (2006) - my students made the greatest gains, in the school, on the standardized test given statewide.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.A. English Minor in Communication and Sociology 2003 M.A. Reading 2009 M.A. +30 (various graduate courses that benefit my teaching) 2020

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a full time middle school teacher for DoDEA in Ft. Campbell. I currently teach 6th ELA, but that is ever changing (the previous three years I taught 8th ELA, 6th ELA and 6th AVID...which is completely different than what I taught the five years before that...you get the idea! I live in Tennessee with my wonderful husband and two beautiful children; our hands and hearts are full. I am passionate about teaching writing and reading. It is my goal to create a love of writing and reading in my classroom.
