I've been teaching for 15 years in S. Florida public schools. I created the 12th grade AP Lit. program from scratch at Everglades High School and continue teaching it today (this marks 9 years).
I believe in making every second you are with the students matter. I try to make students understand the purpose behind what they're reading, what makes a classic universally appealing, and what are the deeper thematic subtexts of the literature and poetry we study.
My students have consistently scored at our above the national average on their AP exam for the last 7 of the 9 years I've been teaching. I use all my own self-created materials. I was recognized (along with a few other AP teachers at our school) for having some of the highest minority passing rates in the nation last year (2011). Our AP program is open enrollment, meaning no prerequisites required. These materials definitely assist in getting the most out of my students. I also won Teacher of the Year at my highschool for 2013-2014.
I have a Masters of Fine Arts from University of Miami in Creative Writing, hence my preference to creating my own stuff. I also have undergraduate degrees in Psychology and English.
I've been teaching since 1997. I also did some work tutoring with Kaplan, teaching the SAT and GRE. I love teaching--just wish it paid better.
